The ACL Race Series Main Bearing Set for BMW’s S65 engine is built for the kind of driver who doesn’t back off at redline. The 4.0-liter V8 found in the E90, E92, and E93 M3 is one of BMW’s greatest engines—rev-happy, responsive, and brutally precise. But anyone who’s pushed one hard knows its weak point: rod and main bearing wear. ACL’s Race Series bearings are made to fix that. They replace that risk with strength, stability, and confidence when oil temps rise and revs stay pinned.
Each bearing uses ACL’s proven tri-metal construction. A hardened steel backing adds rigidity, a copper-lead layer provides strength under load, and a precision overlay maintains a stable oil film at high pressure. Together, they keep friction low and oil control steady through full-throttle acceleration, sharp shifts, and long, high-RPM runs.
The materials used here are the same trusted in top-tier motorsport engines—built to endure stress, heat, and punishment. They hold consistent clearances, resist fatigue, and maintain oil pressure where it counts most. That means smoother operation, better cooling, and a bottom end that can handle the kind of abuse only a high-revving S65 can dish out.
Installation is clean and precise. These bearings are a direct-fit replacement for the S65, requiring no machining or modification. You get factory geometry with race-ready strength, a combination that brings reliability without compromise.
For M3 owners chasing the perfect balance of precision and durability, ACL Race Series bearings are a must. They reinforce the core of your S65, keeping it cool, smooth, and confident every time you push through the gears—or hang near 8,400 RPM just because you can.
FEATURES
- High-strength overlay plate: Reduced thickness improves fatigue resistance, allowing the bearings to handle the extreme stress and high-RPM demands of the S65 V8.
- Hardened steel backs: Reinforce the bearing lining to provide solid support and enhance retention in the housing during hard acceleration and sustained high loads.
- Increased crush: Ensures improved bearing grip and stability within the housing, maintaining precise alignment even under heavy load and temperature changes.
- No flash plating: Eliminating flash plating on the bearing backs improves heat transfer and maximizes surface grip between the bearing and housing.
- Optimized eccentricity: Compensates for bore distortion at high RPM, helping to form a strong hydrodynamic oil film for consistent lubrication.
- ¾-grooved main bearings: Enhance oil flow to connecting rod bearings while maintaining a large load-carrying surface area for better crankshaft support.
- Tight wall tolerances: Precision manufacturing ensures consistent bearing clearances, helping maintain stable oil pressure and reliable performance.
- Enlarged ID chamfers: Designed to accommodate the large fillet radius found on performance crankshafts, ensuring smooth rotation and long-term durability.

PREPREG is a common term for a reinforcing fabric such carbon which has been pre-impregnated with a resin system. This resin system (typically epoxy) already includes the proper curing agent. As a result, the prepreg is ready to be laid into the mold without the addition of any more resin. In order for the laminate to cure, an autoclave production process is used, a combination of high pressure and heat.
- Maximum strength and performance characterictics. In a hand layup production process, it is difficult to achieve 50% fabric and 50% resin content. Typical hand laminates, even when vacuum bagged, end up with a significant amount of excess resin. Excess resin increases brittleness and reduces overall strength properties. On the other hand, most prepregs contain around 35% resin. This is ideal for maximum cured properties and generally impossible to achieve in normal hand lamination.
- Uniformity and repeatability. The prepreg is of uniform thickness and each part coming out of the mold may theoretically be the same. Vacuum bagging technology may have some errors in processing, but prepreg ensures production consistency.
- Reduce curing time. After the thermal curing cycle, no need to wait for the standard 48 hours can be fully cured.
- Aesthetics. Although prepreg processing still requires mold preparation and demoulding, prepreg processing eliminates air bubbles, makes it easier to obtain a smooth, glossy surface as well as eliminates any seaming lines.
