The ACL Race Series Connecting Rod Bearing Set for BMW M20, M50, M52, and M54 engines is built for engines that work hard and refuse to quit. Stock bearings are fine for everyday use, but when you raise boost, extend RPMs, or chase consistent power lap after lap, they can quickly show their limits. These ACL bearings are made for that extra margin—the kind that keeps your bottom end together when the pressure’s on.
Each bearing uses tri-metal construction with a hardened steel backing for strength, a copper-lead intermediate layer for load support, and a precision-finished overlay that holds a stable oil film even under high stress. That layered structure helps control friction and temperature while keeping oil pressure consistent across all cylinders. The result? A smoother, more predictable engine that can handle the heat of aggressive tuning or extended track sessions.
ACL’s Race Series material is proven in competition engines around the world. It offers excellent fatigue strength, strong embeddability, and resistance to wear or seizure. These bearings run tight and true, supporting stable clearances and reliable lubrication through every heat cycle.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for BMW’s legendary straight-six engines—found in models like the E30, E36, E39, E46, and Z3/Z4—they install cleanly without modification. The geometry matches OEM spec for seamless assembly, giving you confidence that everything bolts up right the first time.
If you’re building a street-tuned 325i, restoring a 530i, or prepping an E36 for weekend track duty, the ACL Race bearings are a smart, proven choice. They reinforce the heart of your engine so you can push harder, rev higher, and drive with the confidence that it’ll hold together every time.
FEATURES
- Performance-engineered upgrade: ACL Race Series bearings deliver stronger reliability and load handling compared to BMW’s original rod bearings, ideal for performance and rebuilt M20–M54 engines.
- Built for BMW straight-six engines: Designed to address bearing wear and oil clearance issues common in older BMW inline-six engines, ensuring smoother operation and extended service life.
- Precision factory tolerances: Machined to exact OEM specifications for consistent clearances, maintaining proper oil pressure and crank stability under heavy stress.
- Durable tri-metal construction: Features a hardened steel backing, copper-lead intermediate layer, and precision overlay for excellent fatigue strength and wear resistance.
- Optimized contact surface: The non-tin flash surface enhances bearing-to-housing fit, minimizing distortion and improving load distribution under high RPM or temperature.
- Proven for demanding applications: Suitable for tuned, track, or endurance-driven BMW six-cylinder engines, providing long-term reliability and consistent performance where it counts.

PREPREG is a common term for a reinforcing fabric such carbon which has been pre-impregnated with a resin system. This resin system (typically epoxy) already includes the proper curing agent. As a result, the prepreg is ready to be laid into the mold without the addition of any more resin. In order for the laminate to cure, an autoclave production process is used, a combination of high pressure and heat.
- Maximum strength and performance characterictics. In a hand layup production process, it is difficult to achieve 50% fabric and 50% resin content. Typical hand laminates, even when vacuum bagged, end up with a significant amount of excess resin. Excess resin increases brittleness and reduces overall strength properties. On the other hand, most prepregs contain around 35% resin. This is ideal for maximum cured properties and generally impossible to achieve in normal hand lamination.
- Uniformity and repeatability. The prepreg is of uniform thickness and each part coming out of the mold may theoretically be the same. Vacuum bagging technology may have some errors in processing, but prepreg ensures production consistency.
- Reduce curing time. After the thermal curing cycle, no need to wait for the standard 48 hours can be fully cured.
- Aesthetics. Although prepreg processing still requires mold preparation and demoulding, prepreg processing eliminates air bubbles, makes it easier to obtain a smooth, glossy surface as well as eliminates any seaming lines.
