The ACL Race Series Main Bearing Set for BMW M20, M50, M52, and M54 engines is built for people who expect their straight-six to take punishment—and come back asking for more. These engines are known for their smoothness and reliability, but once you start adding power, extending RPMs, or pushing through long track sessions, the factory bearings start to feel the strain. That’s where ACL’s Race Series bearings step in, giving you the kind of strength and stability that keeps everything spinning smoothly under serious pressure.
Each bearing is made using ACL’s trusted tri-metal construction. A hardened steel backing provides rigidity, a copper-lead core handles the load, and a precision overlay maintains a steady oil film even under high heat. This layered design reduces friction, keeps oil pressure consistent, and helps balance crank rotation through aggressive driving or sustained high-speed runs.
The material and design come straight from motorsport applications, tested in engines that live at redline. With exceptional fatigue strength and tight, consistent clearances, these bearings deliver reliable oil control and temperature stability even under constant stress. It’s the kind of upgrade you install once and trust every time you push your car to its limits.
Installation is straightforward. ACL designed these bearings as a direct-fit upgrade for BMW’s M20, M50, M52, and M54 engines—no machining or modification needed. Everything fits with factory precision but carries the endurance of race-ready construction.
For those building or rebuilding engines found in the E30, E36, E39, E46, or Z3/Z4, ACL Race Series bearings are more than just insurance—they’re the foundation for confidence. From street builds to track-prepped machines, they keep your BMW’s bottom end strong, cool, and perfectly balanced, no matter how hard you drive.
FEATURES
- High-strength overlay plate: Designed with a thinner overlay for improved fatigue resistance—perfect for the high-RPM demands of BMW’s M20 through M54 straight-six engines.
- Hardened steel backing: Every main bearing includes a hardened steel back to enhance support, ensuring the bearing stays securely seated in its housing during high load or extended use.
- Enhanced crush fitment: Features increased crush for superior retention, helping maintain perfect bearing alignment even under thermal expansion and heavy vibration.
- No flash plating: The removal of flash plating from the back of the bearing improves heat transfer and enhances grip between the bearing and its housing, promoting better thermal management.
- Optimized eccentricity: Engineered with increased eccentricity to compensate for bore distortion at high RPM, supporting stable oil film formation and consistent lubrication under stress.
- 3/4 groove main bearings: Balances bearing surface area and oil flow, ensuring optimal oil delivery to the connecting rod bearings while maintaining load capacity.
- Tight wall tolerances: Precision manufacturing delivers consistent bearing wall thickness, allowing builders to maintain reliable oil clearances across all journals.
- Enlarged ID chamfers: Designed with enlarged inner-diameter chamfers where needed to accommodate the large fillet radii of performance crankshafts, ensuring durability in tuned and race applications.

PREPREG is a common term for a reinforcing fabric such carbon which has been pre-impregnated with a resin system. This resin system (typically epoxy) already includes the proper curing agent. As a result, the prepreg is ready to be laid into the mold without the addition of any more resin. In order for the laminate to cure, an autoclave production process is used, a combination of high pressure and heat.
- Maximum strength and performance characterictics. In a hand layup production process, it is difficult to achieve 50% fabric and 50% resin content. Typical hand laminates, even when vacuum bagged, end up with a significant amount of excess resin. Excess resin increases brittleness and reduces overall strength properties. On the other hand, most prepregs contain around 35% resin. This is ideal for maximum cured properties and generally impossible to achieve in normal hand lamination.
- Uniformity and repeatability. The prepreg is of uniform thickness and each part coming out of the mold may theoretically be the same. Vacuum bagging technology may have some errors in processing, but prepreg ensures production consistency.
- Reduce curing time. After the thermal curing cycle, no need to wait for the standard 48 hours can be fully cured.
- Aesthetics. Although prepreg processing still requires mold preparation and demoulding, prepreg processing eliminates air bubbles, makes it easier to obtain a smooth, glossy surface as well as eliminates any seaming lines.
