The MMR Performance BMW N55 S55 Crank Hub 4-Pinned Single Piece Upgrade offers maximum protection against the crank hub slip issue that affects N55 and S55 engines. Featuring a 4-pinned design for enhanced torsional security, this single-piece billet upgrade locks the hub in place, preventing timing issues in high-performance and tuned engines. Designed for track and high-power builds, it’s the ultimate solution to ensure reliability and engine safety under extreme loads.
Engine failures caused by the standard three-piece crank hub on the N55 & S55 engine are (unfortunately) well known, but these are fully addressed with the installation of the MMR Performance 4-Pinned Single-Piece billet Crank Hub, together with the option of adding our Capture Plate for ultimate security.
MMR Performance now offers this uprated version of our popular Single-Piece Crank Hub, with a 4-Pin dowelled location that locks onto the end of the crankshaft.
The OE crank hub unit’s friction plate are known to slip rotationally, causing the timing to alter enough that piston-to-valve contact can occur, leaving owners with a very expensive repair bill.
This 4-pin version of our Single-Piece N55 S55 Crank Hub kit is simply the ultimate solution to preventing this problem before it happens on high horsepower & torque engines.
The centrepiece of the MMR kit is the UK made CNC-machined one-piece crank hub, created from billet EN36 steel that’s been heat-treated with a 0.75mm case hardening, making it incredibly strong and durable. Along with this comes four aerospace precision machined dowels that mechanically lock the hub to end of the crank itself, plus a brand new OE bolt.
Installation of these dowels is certainly not a DIY job. But to make the job easier for the professionals, ensuring that the required crank modifications are made safely and accurately, the MMR kit also includes a full installation jig that includes a bolt-on drilling guide, a location bolt for this guide, plus an HSS rolled high speed Drill Bit.
Together, the Single-Piece design combined with the 4-Pin location ensures that there is now no way that the friction plates can ever slip. With the new OE crank bolt tightened appropriately, this delivers a transformational improvement in reliability versus the OE version.
As MMR Performance offers two versions of the Single-Piece Crank Hub, which is best for you, pinned or unpinned? For most standard to Stage 1 tuned N55 & S55 engines, the unpinned MMR Single-Piece Crank Hub (MMR20-1003) is more than sufficient. Installation is more straightforward as the end of the crankshaft does not need to be precision drilled to mount the four locating dowels. However, for high power/torque engines tuned beyond this level, we recommend this upgraded pinned version of the Crank Hub that incorporates the 4-pin dowel drive mounting for the ultimate engine security.

Finally. as another option alongside the 4-Pinned Crank Hub, adding the MMR Capture Plate ensures that owners have complete peace of mind.
The Capture Plate removes the possibility for the crank bolt to be able to loosen with the engine’s vibrations or harmonics. The Capture Plate is an additional billet aluminium hat that securely bolts over the entire head of the crank bolt, making it literally impossible for the bolt to come undone. PREPREG is a common term for a reinforcing fabric such carbon which has been pre-impregnated with a resin system. This resin system (typically epoxy) already includes the proper curing agent. As a result, the prepreg is ready to be laid into the mold without the addition of any more resin. In order for the laminate to cure, an autoclave production process is used, a combination of high pressure and heat.
- Maximum strength and performance characterictics. In a hand layup production process, it is difficult to achieve 50% fabric and 50% resin content. Typical hand laminates, even when vacuum bagged, end up with a significant amount of excess resin. Excess resin increases brittleness and reduces overall strength properties. On the other hand, most prepregs contain around 35% resin. This is ideal for maximum cured properties and generally impossible to achieve in normal hand lamination.
- Uniformity and repeatability. The prepreg is of uniform thickness and each part coming out of the mold may theoretically be the same. Vacuum bagging technology may have some errors in processing, but prepreg ensures production consistency.
- Reduce curing time. After the thermal curing cycle, no need to wait for the standard 48 hours can be fully cured.
- Aesthetics. Although prepreg processing still requires mold preparation and demoulding, prepreg processing eliminates air bubbles, makes it easier to obtain a smooth, glossy surface as well as eliminates any seaming lines.
